great type treatment on this new(ish) release by Canadian power pop punks DEFEKTORS. nice job guys! i'd love to credit whoever did it, but there is no mention of who created the layout anywehre to be found....

SLICES - Hardcore

Slices are one of my top bands right now. aside from playing brutally oppressive hardcore ala crossed out, they also know how to release a tight looking 7"! check out the pics of their newest release on home invasion records.... 2 color screen printed covers on a nice 100 lb black stock paper and a rad little insert! perfect! i really like that they are utilizing such a light typeface as a logo. very clean and slick looking, while also setting them apart from so many other bands in this genre. pretty sure this record is already out of press, so pick up their 1st 7" at 16oh records . the art is not quite as compelling, but the music.... MY GOD!

Chip board = PUNK at 16oh! Records!

seriously, what's more punk than screen printed record covers on chip board!?!?! "west coast grind violence" at it's finest with this IN DISGUST record, and they earn extra points in my book for making it a 10" instead of just a short 12". nice work guys! great use of the inside panel too (see pic!). pick up your copy HERE

OBITS ~ New Artwork and Music by Rick Froberg

socal native and post punk icon Rick Froberg has resurfaced with a new post Hot Snakes project called OBITS, and holy hell is this one killer record! their debut LP came out a few months ago on sub pop.... pick up a copy of the vinyl if you come across it, you won't be sorry. it might be one of the greatest sounding pieces of wax i've ever come across.... feels like 180 gram (doesn't say it is) and it's just so loud and crisp once that needle hits the record!

once again, another amazing layout by Froberg that just oozes with style. he does an excellent job of blending vintage typography with his wild illustrations to create some of the most interesting compositions to ever grace a record cover. the entire layout is tight and comes across as a single idea, even down to the free mp3 download card! check out the pics and then cruise over to his site to check out some more of his art.

RAW NERVES!

saw a great band last night on tour from portland called RAW NERVES.... go check them out if they are coming to your town. aside from being a great live band (and of course, most important for this blog), they had some really nice woodcut style tee designs! UP THE PUNKS!

raymond pettibon

went to a great group show called "Rock Paper Scissors" back in March over at the Robert Berman Gallery in Santa Monica and have been meaning to make a post about it ever since..... it featured work by Daniel Johnston, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, and Ron English (among others), but most important to me was the Raymond Pettibon stuff! Ever since the very first time i held a Black Flag album cover in my hands i've been in love with Pettibon's work. His bold brush strokes are iconic in the world of punk and hardcore, so it's always a treat for me to see his stuff up in a gallery.... check out the pics!
