here's another great looking Raw Nerve 7" i purchased recently from the Youth Attack Records website. Ryan Lowry shot all the photographs for this layout, and he did an excellent job pulling together the right assortment of dark and abstract imagery to set the tone for a record titled "Midnight". i love this front cover shot, and i think it's great that there is no type on this panel...
the back cover is where the band name and record title are seen. in the absence of a photographic image, there is just a single hand drawn circle which mimics the placement of the circular lens flair in the image on the front panel. i like that the type and the Youth Attack logo were centered with the circle, it makes for a well-balanced minimal composition....
the jacket for this ep is actually made up of two separate pieces. the front and back panels are attached on the top and bottom, with the two sides of the sleeve left open. this allows for an inner sleeve to slide out to the left or right. this next shot is of the front side of the inner sleeve, and it is another great photograph by Ryan. all these shots where he is pointing his camera at the light source in darkness are working out really well for him...
flip the inner sleeve over and the panel opens out from the center. bark at the moon...
this next shot is with the panels open so you can see all three panels side by side. this is normally where the record would be sitting, but i've removed it so you could see the lyrics. all the type here matches back to the back panel with a simple sans-serif font that has been run thru the photocopier a few times. dirty, but still easy to read... it's a delicate balance but they nailed it here. the images on these two side panels don't quite pack the same emotional impact that the others in the layout do for some reason. maybe it's just cause they feel unrelated to each other and they are being forced to interact with one another on the spread...
white vinyl, crisp black and white labels, and a black dust sleeve... this is pretty much my favorite color combo in the world as far as records are concerned...
