Sectarian Violence Ep...

another cool submission came in from Grave Mistake this past month.... This debut ep from the International straight edge hardcore band Sectarian Violence is a very solid looking punk record. The cover art looks like it was made with the same photo-copier as the Feral Ward / Partners In Crime releases were made on. The chopped up photocopied imagery mixed with the compact type face is a winning combination, its just a really great example of DIY design done well...

These are offset printed black and white covers that were cut and glued, nice and professional. The back cover has another cut up and abstracted photo-copier masterpiece that comes in on an angle from the right spine of the sleeve. arranging the art on that slight angle really added a lot of interest into this panel, and the use of a heavy serif type face brought in a bit of a retro feel to the composition....

There is a one sided photo copied insert included for the lyrics with this record. There is a whole lot of type ordering on this page, and I have to say it's really nice to see on a punk record. All the titles get a blown out serif type treatment while the liner notes are bold sans-serif instead. For the actual lyrics, a clean and easy to read light italic font was chosen to do the job...

They totally knocked it out of the park with these A and B side labels... The A side has a nice balance between the necessary information and art without feeling too crowded. i also love the way they cornered out their long name in order to keep the size of the type large. this also creates a really nice interaction with the diagonal line of the V in their logo, very dynamic...

The B side label has their logo nice and big, and I have to say this is classic punk logo design at it's finest. It's just a really great looking primitive symbol that comes off really raw yet readable while still being iconic and original....

Be sure to snag this from Grave Mistake if you don't already have it...
