Joint Damage - Strike Gently Lp

another great release that our friends over at Sorry State sent over for review on the blog, the Joint Damage "Strike Gently" lp.  the band can no longer legally use the name "Joint Damage" thanks to a recent cease & desist letter, so the cover art of this record is simply a large color photograph of the band hanging out in a field. in lieu of typography, sorry state made a red screen printed slip cover that folds over the spine to act as an info-card.  this was probably unintentional, but the addition of the strong red side panel created a 3-way color blocked effect with the photo.  that baby blue sky with the golden field below is really grounded by the worn red color of the screen printed paper....

here is a shot of the cover without the info-card, it really is a great photo for the cover of a record.  the composition is well framed, utilizes great color space, and offers a world of intrigue as far as content goes...

these covers were professionally full color offset printed and folded / glued.  unfortunately the back cover gets slightly obstructed by the wrap around info-card, but in this case i do still like the added color it provides.  here's a shot...

here is a shot without the card, i really love the type design on this back panel.  it's great that everything has been intentionally skewed to not line up with each other in their columns. all the visuals for this record were handled by Nick Goode, who you may remember from the excellent design work he did on the Brain F≠ records which were posted here earlier.  you can really see the strengths of his personal aesthetic coming thru on this panel, as there is a huge amount of meticulous detail paid to both they type and iconography here...

this record also comes with a 11" x 11" black and white offset printed insert, both sides pretty much being dedicated to collage art of found vintage imagery.  this side is awesome...

the piece on the flipside has some liner notes added to the bottom...

in addition to the insert, each record also comes with a double sided photocopy of the actual cease & desist letter the band received in regards to the use of their name.  this is 100% the best use of a C&D letter i have ever seen...

black dust sleeves are the shit, especially when you have red marble vinyl.  so sick...

pick up this record from Sorry State and support these fine people....
